Giant granite pinnacles, whale sharks, trevally walls and barracuda tornadoes — the best diving in the Gulf of Thailand

Chumphon Pinnacle — глубоководный дайв-сайт

What is Chumphon Pinnacle

Chumphon Pinnacle is a group of massive granite underwater rocks located 11 km northwest of Koh Tao. The pinnacles rise from a sandy bottom at 36 meters to 14 meters below the surface, forming an underwater mountain ridge about 200 meters long. This is the most famous dive site in the Gulf of Thailand — a place where Thailand's big pelagic life congregates on an incredible scale. Powerful currents bring plankton and nutrients, creating an ecosystem that attracts everything from microscopic shrimp to 12-meter whale sharks.

What you'll see underwater

Chumphon Pinnacle is an underwater circus of big marine life. Every dive here is unpredictable and thrilling.

Trevally walls

Huge schools of bigeye trevally (Caranx sexfasciatus) are Chumphon Pinnacle's main attraction. Thousands of silver fish gather in dense 'walls', surrounding the pinnacles from all sides. When you hover in midwater and a living silver wall closes around you — it's one of the most powerful underwater moments you can experience. Trevally schools are present year-round and are permanent residents of this dive site.

Barracuda tornadoes

Chevron barracuda (Sphyraena putnamae) form spiraling 'tornadoes' around the pinnacle tops — a breathtaking spectacle. Hundreds of predatory fish up to a meter long twist into spirals, slowly rising and descending. Barracuda pose no danger to divers and allow close approach for stunning photos. The barracuda schools at Chumphon Pinnacle are among the largest in Southeast Asia.

Whale sharks

Chumphon Pinnacle is the number one spot in the Gulf of Thailand for whale shark encounters. These majestic giants up to 12-18 meters long visit the pinnacle primarily from March to September, following plankton concentrations. The whale shark is a peaceful filter feeder, completely safe for divers. The moment when a silhouette larger than your dive boat emerges from the blue haze — that's a memory for life. Some individuals return to Chumphon Pinnacle year after year.

Predators

Sharks & groupers

At depths of 25-36 meters at the base of the pinnacles, blacktip and whitetip reef sharks patrol the sandy bottom between rocks. Giant groupers (up to 2 meters long and weighing over 100 kg) occupy large crevices and caves in the rocks — you can observe them at arm's length. At greater depths, occasional bull sharks appear — among the most impressive predators of tropical seas. Moray eels, rays, and lionfish complete the underwater picture.

Dive profile

Chumphon Pinnacle is a dive site for experienced divers. Strong currents and significant depth require good training and confident skills.

Depth

Dive parameters

Maximum depth: 36 meters (at the base of the main pinnacle). Recommended range: 18-30 meters — this is where the main marine life concentrates. Pinnacle tops are at 14 meters. Usually two pinnacles are visited per dive, moving between them along the underwater ridge. Dive time: 40-50 minutes at recommended depths. When diving to 36 meters — no more than 20-25 minutes considering decompression limits.

Max 36m Recommended 18-30m Tops at 14m
Currents

Conditions & currents

Strong currents are normal at Chumphon Pinnacle. They're what bring nutrients and attract big fish. When current is strong, a negative entry is recommended (no surface stop) — immediately descend to the rocks. At depth, the current is usually weaker. It's important to stay close to the pinnacle, using it as shelter from the flow. On calm days, you can freely hover around the rocks, enjoying the panorama of marine life.

Diver requirements

Chumphon Pinnacle is not a place for first dives. You need confidence, experience, and good physical fitness here.

Certification

Minimum level

PADI Advanced Open Water Diver certification or equivalent is recommended. For dives to the pinnacle base (36m), a Deep Diving Specialty or equivalent experience is required. Good buoyancy is mandatory: strong currents and open water don't forgive mistakes. Experience diving in currents is highly desirable. This is an intermediate to advanced dive site — not suitable for beginners.

Tip

Dive preparation

If you have limited open water and current experience — we recommend completing a PADI Advanced Open Water course with us on Samui before visiting Chumphon Pinnacle. The course includes a deep dive and navigation, both useful at the pinnacle. A Drift Diver course is also beneficial for confident current handling. We never take unprepared divers to Chumphon Pinnacle — it's a safety matter.

Season

Best time for diving

The best season for Chumphon Pinnacle is March to September. During this time, visibility reaches 20-30 meters, water warms to 28-30°C, and chances of encountering a whale shark are highest. Peak season is April-June when plankton attracts the largest pelagic inhabitants. Diving is possible year-round, but in November-February visibility may drop to 10-15 meters due to monsoon currents. However, even in winter Chumphon Pinnacle remains one of the region's best dive sites — trevally and barracuda schools don't go anywhere.
