About Nang Yuan Island

Koh Nang Yuan is three small islands connected by a stunning white sandbar. It is one of the most photographed places in all of Thailand. The island is located just a few minutes by longtail boat from the northwest coast of Koh Tao. Entry fee is 250 baht. Plastic bottles are strictly prohibited — this is the island's strict environmental rule. At the top of the hill there is a viewpoint with a 360° panoramic view offering breathtaking vistas of turquoise waters, the sandbar, and all three islands. The underwater world of Nang Yuan rivals its above-water beauty — it is home to two magnificent dive sites, Japanese Garden and Twins, and the snorkeling here is considered among the best in Thailand.

Japanese Garden

A coral garden at the base of Nang Yuan island — one of the most beautiful shallow dive sites in the Gulf of Thailand. A gentle slope from 2 to 16 meters depth, covered with hard corals and anemones. Perfect for beginner divers and snorkelers thanks to calm conditions and shallow depth. Home to clownfish in vibrant anemones, schools of butterflyfish, blue tangs (like Dory from the movie), parrotfish shimmering in every color of the rainbow, and cornetfish. Calm, clear water, excellent visibility, and rich underwater life make Japanese Garden one of the best places for a first dive ever or a relaxed drift over the reef.

Twins (Nang Yuan Pinnacle)

'Twins' — two massive underwater boulders located between Nang Yuan islands and Koh Tao. Depth from 2 to 18 meters. This is a true underwater garden with incredible coral diversity: table corals, staghorn corals, brain corals, fire corals — all creating a picturesque underwater landscape. Between the boulders stretches a sandy bottom where blue-spotted rays and reef sharks often rest. Excellent visibility, mild currents, and vivid colors make Twins an ideal spot for underwater photography. Also home to angelfish, groupers, moray eels, and numerous nudibranchs for macro enthusiasts.

Snorkeling at Nang Yuan

Koh Nang Yuan is one of the best snorkeling spots in all of Thailand. Visibility from 10 to 25 meters lets you enjoy the underwater world even from the surface. Rich shallow corals literally teem with tropical fish — butterflyfish, parrotfish, blue tangs, clownfish in anemones, triggerfish, and dozens of other species. No diving certificate needed — just a mask, snorkel, and fins. Japanese Garden is especially great for snorkeling: depth starts from 1–2 meters, water is calm and crystal clear. This is a perfect activity for families with children, couples, and anyone who wants to see the beauty of the underwater world without diving.

Corals and Reefs

Parrotfish, sea urchins, starfish on the sandy bottom. Visibility up to 25m — perfect for photos.

Nang Yuan Viewpoint — 360° Panorama

The famous Nang Yuan viewpoint is accessible via a hiking trail — the climb takes 15–20 minutes. From the top, you get breathtaking views of all three islands, the white sandbar, turquoise waters of the gulf, and neighboring Koh Tao. This is one of the most recognizable views in Thailand, reproduced on thousands of postcards and all over social media. Best time to visit is early morning or late afternoon, when the light is soft, there are fewer tourists, and photos come out especially stunning. Don't forget water (not in plastic!) and comfortable shoes — the trail is steep and rocky in places.
