An encounter with the world's largest fish — an unforgettable experience for divers and snorkelers

About whale sharks

The whale shark (Rhincodon typus) is the largest fish on the planet. These gentle giants reach up to 18 meters in length and weigh up to 20 tons. Despite their intimidating name, they are completely harmless to humans.

Gentle giants

Whale sharks are filter feeders. They eat exclusively plankton, small fish, and fish eggs. Their huge mouth (up to 1.5 meters wide) filters thousands of liters of water. They are completely safe for humans — they have no teeth capable of causing harm. Each whale shark has a unique spot pattern, like a fingerprint.

Size

Up to 18 meters long

The average whale shark in the Gulf of Thailand waters is 4-8 meters (juveniles). But larger specimens up to 12 meters are also encountered. The maximum recorded size is 18.8 meters. Observing such a creature underwater is an experience that changes your perception of the underwater world forever.

Where to see whale sharks

Three main dive sites near Koh Tao where whale sharks are most frequently spotted. All accessible from Koh Samui in a single day.

Chumphon Pinnacle — дайв-сайт китовых акул
#1

Chumphon Pinnacle

The number one spot for whale shark encounters. Underwater rocks at 14-36 meters depth attract massive fish schools, which in turn attract whale sharks. Giant groupers, barracuda, and batfish also live here. For certified divers (Advanced OW recommended).

Sail Rock — дайв-сайт

Sail Rock

The best dive site in the Gulf of Thailand and the second most popular whale shark encounter spot. The rock rises from 30 meters to the surface, creating a unique ecosystem. The famous 'chimney' (vertical swim-through), massive schools of barracuda and trevally. Suitable for all levels.

Details

Southwest Pinnacle

A group of underwater rocks southwest of Koh Tao. Depth 5-26 meters. Whale sharks appear less frequently here than at Chumphon, but sightings are regularly recorded. Rich in soft corals and anemones. Reef sharks, rays, and turtles are frequently spotted.

Season & code of conduct

Season

March — June: best time

Peak whale shark season is March to June when the water is rich in plankton. Water temperature 28-30°C, visibility 15-25 meters. However, sightings occur year-round — October-December chances are also high due to increased plankton during rainy season. We track sightings and will inform you about current chances.

Rules

How to behave during encounter

Keep a minimum distance of 3 meters — don't approach or chase. Don't touch — the skin is covered with protective mucus, touching can harm the animal. Don't use flash photography — it stresses the shark. Don't block its path — if the shark swims toward you, gently move aside. Enjoy the moment calmly — the quieter you are, the longer the shark will stay nearby.

Frequently asked questions

Is a whale shark sighting guaranteed?

No, a sighting is not guaranteed — these are wild animals. However, during season (March—June) chances increase significantly. Our captains know the best spots and monitor reports from other boats. Even without a whale shark — a dive at Chumphon Pinnacle or Sail Rock is an incredible experience with barracuda, groupers, and reef sharks.

Are whale sharks dangerous?

Absolutely not! The whale shark is a filter feeder that eats exclusively plankton and small fish. It has no teeth capable of harming humans. It's the most peaceful and calm large fish in the ocean. No attack on a human has ever been recorded in history.

What time of year to visit?

The best period is March—June. Water is rich in plankton, visibility 15-25 meters, temperature 28-30°C. But sightings also occur in October—December. We recommend planning 2-3 dives during your trip to increase your chances.

Do I need a diving certificate?

Not necessarily! Whale sharks often swim near the surface, so you can see them as a snorkeler. Divers have better chances — at 15-30 meters depth near pinnacles. Without certification, you can dive with an instructor through Discover Scuba Diving (4,900 ฿).

At what depth do whale sharks swim?

Whale sharks are found from the surface to 30+ meters. At Chumphon Pinnacle they usually appear at 15-25 meters depth but often rise to the surface. At Sail Rock they are seen at all depths. Snorkelers also have a real chance of spotting them when sharks feed near the surface.
